That time is here. We expected the devil to come in like a herd of elephants. Instead, he came in like a swarm of termites. One of my sons lives several miles from us. This has its advantages, because the grandchildren are near-by. But the other side of the coin is his having the combination to the garage door, which means he is able to borrow whatever he needs from my supply of tools!

One day he called me on the phone and said, “Dad, I think you have termites.” Earlier that day when he opened my garage door, he happened to notice a tiny hole in the trim. I took seriously what he had told me, and that very day I used a crow bar to pry off the trim. I discovered, much to my dismay, that there was extensive termite damage, not only in the wooden beam that held up the door, but behind the paneling and in the studs that framed in the garage itself.

Two thousand dollars later, the damage was repaired; and I had a contract with an exterminating company, who placed “termite traps” around the entire perimeter of the house, and who inspects the traps four times a year, plus conducts a complete house inspection annually.

I learned several things from this experience. The first is that the damage done was where I was not looking for it; and secondly, all the while the termites were eating my house I didn’t hear a sound.
