Was it baptism or something else?
« on: March 22, 2009, 02:18:14 PM »
We have several baptisms a year and one case in particular is still in my mind.

As this man was going down in the water all of a sudden I saw his hand reach out and grab on to the side of the baptismal.  His hand, wrist, and part of his forearm never went underwater.  Did it take?  WDYT?

The poor man must have had a fear of going under water.  I'm sure that God accepted this as his best effort.  He was, for all intents and purposes, immersed.  The seat of his intelligence went under water, at least.

Reminded me of some of those old horror movies that I watched as a kid.  You thought the evil person was dead but then this hand would still be alive and the whole evil thing would come back to life again and again.

That makes me feel better to know that it took, as I thought he was still hanging on to this old world..

If the man went into the water...with his heart being "immersed" .in a matter of speaking.....his hand is a non-issue.

If a bride walks down the isle...to marry her bow...is she realty married if her veil falls off and the ceremony goes on without it...is the couple really married????   Of course....

I think we want to be careful to not distort the "symbols" Christ has given us and their "purposes."  If we are not careful...our brains will distort them and use them as omens.

There is more symbolism in this statement than first meets the eye.

Only God knows the heart. If the man was hanging onto the old way of life Jesus will know it and you will too as the fruit is displayed in the life. On the other hand the theif on the cross was not baptized at all yet by accepting Jesus he accepted Jesus' baptism in his behalf. Rahab and Ruth had no official baptism and yet were right with God by faith.

The man did all he was capable of doing unto his very best, Jesus knows that and adds his very best, and it works fine.   Hope the man didn't slip on the wet tank floor and hurt himself.

I was baptized in the Davidson river in Pisgah Forest and slipped on slick rocks a little.

But the pastor of mediteranian descent tanned was rather white.   I knew but he didn't till he stepped in how COOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLddddd Davidson River is,  coming down from headwaters a lot higher in the mountains.    I was a stinker I don't remember if I warned him.
