The typology in a brief nutshell :

Tamar had no husband nor child, no roots of security, no fulfillment of her role, her place in life and why she was there, was incomplete, empty. 

Judah's promises were not fulfilled. 

She obtained Judah's name/seal/signet while taking matters into her own hands.  Judah's seal gave her the covenant of life in the face of the threat of death, the equivalent of a husband by whom she had a child, both roots and security, with fulfillment of her role, established her place in life and why she was there, removing emptiness and adding completeness.

Jesus Christ took matters into His Own hands -
Isaiah 59:
16 ¶  And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.
17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke.
18  According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence.
19  So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.
20  And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.
21  As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever.

Christ bought back all of humanity, He took the risk in becoming able to sin through His human identity, but taking humanity into Himself, living sinlessly and perfectly through unbroken union with Father God, and dying vicariously as the sum total sinfulness of humanity, in place of the human species,  rising to victorious eternal Divine + human - life and power, in order to intercede for humanity to obtain Divine power and promises to work in them and for them to partner with and take hold of, was the only way to successfully purchase the human species and wrest them that are willing from Satan's power and grasp. As the Son of Man/ Son of God/ owner of humanity Jesus Christ was Sealed with Father God's Seal / name / Adoption / rights and privileges etc.

John 1:12  But as many as received him, to them gave he power<1849> to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

The law empowered Judah to call for Tamar's execution for whoredom.  What saved her and granted her a home and alimony and child support ?

What saved Jesus the man from sinning and eternal death, and granted Him a home in Heaven, and promise of brethren and all that home implies ?

Tamar had a seal that told of whose family she was of and protected her-
Genesis 38:
24 ¶  And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.
25  When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.
26  And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

John 6:27  Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

Jesus became sin for us, in Gethsemene, and during the unlawful trials, and on the Cross, His Seal remained with Him as He never sinned personally.  Jesus took all humanity into Himself, the human species was preserved in Christ.   But His seal covered Christ and if in Christ, once in Christ, the seal of Jesus covers those who abide in Him.    God wants the union and character to be born in us, in like figure as Tamar was given children of the tribe of Judah of whom Jesus came centuries later.

Leads to thinking about this in different lines.

She (Tamar) obtained Judah's name/seal/signet while taking matters into her own hands.  Judah's seal gave her the covenant of life in the face of the threat of death,

The parallels differ at the point of the "promises" -- Judah's promises to Tamar had failed, Tamar took things into her own hands, so far things do not sound like the ways of faith --  yet God's promises never fail.
One of Tamar's  children (she had twins) would fulfill the more sure promise that the ONE through whom all nations would be blessed was to come through Judah. (Though that promise was not stated till Jacob's deathbed blessings and prophecies many years later)   God used Tamar's insecurities and Judah's lust to continue the promised line.

Both Tamar and Judah (as all humans) needed the Messiah for their salvation, only HE lived the perfect life, and paid the price for our transgressions, by which we can claim the seal of God.


Yet the parallel's Ed presented lead to seeing new insights of the seal.

Tamar had a seal that told of whose family she was of and  it protected her from the sentence of death.

When her husband died, Tamar, like Ruth in later years, had a decision to make.
She could have left the camp of Israel and Judah and returned to her own people and their gods.
But like Ruth she chose to stay with her in-laws, who served the living God.

The temptation to leave was probably quite strong when Judah apparently ignored her and failed to fulfill his promise.   However, she did not leave but turned to the only one that she knew as the leader of the band of people who followed the true God (Judah at the time had left his brethren and was working with an Adullamite).   While her actions of playing a harlot are questionable, yet she had made the same choice as Ruth --
Entreat me not to leave, nor to forsake following after thee, for your people shall be my people and your God shall be my God.

Her seal --  "Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.
26  And Judah acknowledged them"

The seal was a sign of whose family she had CHOSEN to belong to bear fruit for.
She had chosen to belong to family that followed the true God.

Thus too -- we have that choice.
The choice of two princes.
The prince of LIFE which Jesus Christ our Savior.
or the prince of this world who is satan and offers only death.

Whose family do we belong to?
Whose signature do we bear upon our foreheads?

Babylon who fornicates with the powers of this world seeking worldly power, fame and fortune.
or Christ through Whom we can have redemption and eternal life in His everlasting kingdom.
