A time will come when instead of shepherds feeding the sheep, the Church will have clowns entertaining the goats.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon

I don't think he claimed the gift of prophecy, but he was spot on.

It seems he really understood both people and churches really well.

Grateful for Psalms 32 and Titus 2:10 While it is true that God gives the message from Scripture and SOP. The taste I give to others about the message sells it or kills it, I learn to walk it well & cook it well & eat it myself, before I preach it.  Then the SDA message appeals by His righteousness.

Doesn't the Bible speak of people in the last days with itching ears wanting smooth things preached to them ? There would be a time when they would not endure sound doctrine. I think Spurgeon was just repeating Scripture in his own words. When messages of fluff and giggle have replaced sermons that lift the standard high and people either applaud or keep quiet are not the goats being fed ?

Recently I heard a sermon where it was said that Adam and Eve were "butt naked" in the garden with heavy emphasis on the word "butt.". It came across as though is was meant to be crass and alarming. It appeared that the time frame was before they sinned. #1 Adam and Eve were clothed with light before they sinned. #2 If the intent was that they were "butt naked" after sin ( it was not made clear) even so, that sounds like something someone in a bar would say. People know what the word naked means. Then it was said that God is there every time we "screw up." Does this sound like something a church pioneer would say ? It is as though language is being used to appeal to street people when most of the time the audience is SDA. Then things are said to draw a laugh. I think our people leave reverence out of our worship so much of the time.

Stan,
My great grandfather on my father's side had a half brother who was named "Had." As a child I wondered why his parents gave him such a funny name. It was years later, as an adult I came to the conclusion that his name was actually Haddon, and that he was named after Charles Haddon Spurgeon. My great grandfather was a preacher but I don't know anything about his brother "Had."
